This is my 6th and the last posting for my ICT and Language course. In this last tutorial, we have been asked to take an online quiz under Pusat Pembangunan Akademik the UJI ICT test for ASAS LEVEL. The result that I got is show above.I'm only got 22/30 for the quiz. Since the quiz was prepared in Bahasa Melayu, so I'm facing a problem to understand several word that I'm not familiar with. Everybody in the class was confused when they want to answer the quiz. So, I think this quiz should be prepared in English because the students will able to understand it easier. Taking this quiz make me realized that I'm still having a lack of knowledge in ICT field and I should made an effort to improve my ICT knowledge.

Although I and my friend take the same quiz, but we got a different question. wiThis is to make sure that student will not cheat or copy th each other. The time given for this quiz is 30 minutes and I think it is enough because the question is so simple. However, this online test has their own weakness whereby, we can't check for the correct answer for the question that we answer it wrong. So, I will not know what is the correct answer for the question that I got wrong. It is more better if they can show the correct answer so that we can learn from it.

Since the course will be ending and this is my last post for the course, I want to share my experience about this course. This course is really useful for me because I'm able to learn about ICT more better. It is really enjoyable and informative. This course make me want to explore more about the using of technolgy. I'm also enjoy the class because my lecturer is so helpful and always give the best for us.This course is not boring because the whole of learning is using the computer and it is more fun. After I'm taking this course, I'm started realized that my computer skills getting better. Now, I can type faster and also knowing more new things about ICT. Blogging is the part things that I learn from this course.Beside that, this course also can improve my English from written aspect and also grammar. So if I'm going to rate this course, I will give it 10 marks, that is informative and very useful course.I don't see any weaknesses through I'm taking this course.

Although blogging is apart from this course, but I'm sure that I will continue this blogging activity because it is really enjoyable.I will never stop to share my opinion with the other.I'm sure, my friend also will do the same thing as I do.This blogging activity has taught me a lot of thing.

Finally, I would like to thank for my beloved lecturer, Prof. Madya Datin Dr.Norizan bt Abdul Razak because of her patiently teach us, and help us so much in this course.Thank you for the advice and all the thing that you have done for us. Beside that, I'm also would like

ONLINE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT

Assalamualaikum and hai again...

In my fifth posting, I'm gonna discuss about the online language proficiency assessment. In last week tutorial, we have discuss about the online language proficiency assessment in OLT book. In the current era of globalization, mastery English is associated with leading edge scientific, technological and economic development. The mastery of English is so important for developing nations such as Malaysian to gain competitive edge in the global market.

Anyway, it doesn't mean to substitute the national language, Bahasa Melayu that have well imbended and well entrenched. Moreover, because English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred to as a "global language". As the world Lingua Franca or in other words the Lingua Franca of the modern era, meaning that English is the world's universal language. While English is not an official language in many countries, it is currently the language most often taught as a second language around the world. This re-emphasize on mastering the English language is a significant policy change that has affected educators, especially those whose professionals’ experiences have largely involved the use of Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction.

For teachers of mathematics and science are receiving English language training through the English for Teaching of Mathematics and Science (ETeMs) program conducted by the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, public universities such as UKM also develops programmed that aim to prepare lecturers trained in Bahasa Melayu, to conduct their lectures and tutorials in English by 2005. This paper proceeds to share the experience at the School of Language and Linguistics of UKM which was commissioned to develop the English language training module for in-service lecturers at UKM.

UKM is a university that provide a higher education based on nationalistic endeavor, adopting Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction. This was managed through translation of knowledge from English into Bahasa Malaysia by academicians. However, in this new millennium and with the onset of globalization, UKM in its efforts to remain competitive in a borderless world has now given emphasize to the use of English for academic and professional purposes. All faculties have been informed that the Senate encourages 30%-70% of first degree program to be conducted in English, in particular for science and technology related discipline such as engineering, Information Sciences and Technology among others. It is also has been given to post-graduate programs to increase the number of foreign students enrolled in UKM.
Learning Care Assessment module allows the portfolio owners to create and manage questions. All the questions and results of test takers are kept in a database built in the system. The questions can be programmed in several forms, which are
  • fill in the blanks
  • true and false
  • multiple-choice
  • multiple answer
  • matching
  • ordering
  • short essay

So, as the conclusion the experience in developing and conducting the online test for the UKM academicians so that profiling of their language proficiency can be conducted for the purpose of placement of English training modules is very valuable indeed. Ideally, the online test should inform on the lecturers' general language ability, linguistic knowledge, and domain use of language. The UKM community also needs to be informed about the test so that majority of the lecturers will come forward and self-rate their proficiency level online.
